Came across this gem while reading the morning paper today. Apparently PSU still gets little respect overall. Even though they rank us 8th, we don't make the playoffs according to them. Go figure.

AP has PSU #8 in its preseason poll, but not in the top 12 for its postseason poll.

I would have to imagine this is simply a product of these two "polls" coming from wildly different sources. This is likely one mans opinion, otherwise theres zero reason to justify these rankings

This poll goes to prove my theory the best seed to be in the entire tournament is 5. Almost zero advantage being in the top 4 based on how the tournament is structured. Really dumb dumb rules they made here.

You get a home game against a G5 team which is awesome in general but also should be an easy win. Then you play the #4 seed which is the worst of the top 4 conference winners. Meanwhile, the #1 seed will have to play the winner of 8/9 which will likely be high level Big 10 or SEC teams that just happened to not win their conference
I also think theres a good amount of proof that a bye week in sports is not always great. Sure you can rest up but you may sit too long and get out of rythym. Just look at Franklins performances after bye weeks

Whoever filled that out followed the format except they just forgot about PSU. Everything they have seeding wise is correct up to 9, then 10 and 11 should be PSU/Michigan.

In the future there will be no G5s in the playoff. They got some pity/charity invites for the first few years. Eventually it will be the B1G/SEC party and no one else gets in

The bye to me is way overrated. It would be huge if all the games were played on home sites, but after round 1 everything is neutral.
The G5 has been completely neutered by NIL, the portal and losing its best teams to the P4 through conference realignment. So the reality is, while every once in a while that 12 seed might be a tough team, you're going to see some comical scores in those games most years. It'll essentially be what amounts as a warm up.
If you're the 1 seed, sure, you get a bye. But your next opponent is likely going to be the 3rd best team in the SEC or the B10. Meanwhile the 5 seed will play the worst conference champion. That team is going to be a team at least a step or 2 below the 8 seed from a talent perspective most years. Then most likely the final 4 you're playing each other. The path to the final 4 is far easier for the 5 seed. And that's comparing it against the one seed. The path for the 2 and 3 seeds are MUCH more difficult then the 5.

Yes on the wear and tear on the bodies, that said time for me to say something stupid.
Given my opinion (which is usually wrong) the current playoff format as we see it will be short-lived and it will not have G5s in it and we'll either expand or shift around in some way, shape, or form. So the real goal for this year is to have that on-campus home playoff game. It gives the fans a ton of juice, it's extra revenue, a ton of potential NIL revenue streams and a whole lot more. Of course you'd love to be undefeated going into the playoffs and having that #1 seed. BUT if you can't, there's something to be said about being the home team and destroying Liberty or Tulane or whatever school from the Funbelt gets in.
OK, now that I've said all the stupid - bring on the downvotes

I've been completely against playoff expansion, particularly in this form, but I agree with you here. This year will be fun, it'll be a novelty. There will be tons of blowouts, the format will be wrong, but at the end of the day it'll be a blast leading up to it. I hope PSU gets a home game, and I hope that there is some effort to have some unique matchups or some north south interesting sites (as in southern schools going north for winter weather and vice versa).
I think the future will hopefully be an AFC/NFC formatting between the B10 and SEC once this reaches its inevitable end, and all this nonsense of committees, computers and rankings go by the wayside.

Big year for CJF, goes without saying. Pressure year in and year out is even greater, with the portal etc. Ppl are not going to tolerate well will make a run once every 4-5 yrs. The expectations will be playoffs or bust, additionally fans are going to want a home playoff game. Can he deliver? We shall see, he needs to be better. Pre-season Top 10 ranking and a lot of hype from the fan base. If the team fails to even make the playoffs this year, I'm not sure where the program goes from here.

The program is fine. We need better play out of our QB this year which I expect, and we'll be a playoff team. If we had Clifford or McSorley, we make it last year. If Allar doesn't take the next step, we will fix it. The real question will eventually be what can we do to take the next step and actually compete for a NC not just a playoff spot.

The AP poll is just that - a poll of a bunch of media writers - many of whom picked PSU at #8. The bracket is just that - one man's fantasy bracket based on nothing. We know how wildly different any preseason poll or prediction looks compared to the final rankings.

And the number 5 seed is very likely to come from the SEC. It could come from the BIG but who would you wager on the committee putting in that spot? So the second best team in the SEC will likely end up playing a G5 at home and the Big12 champ in a neutral site to get to the semi finals. That’s a pretty sweet path to the final four. Would you rather be SEC champ or second best as selected by the committee? Seems like sitting your starters, using that as a scrimmage/bye and getting a home game is a great path to me.

True, they still need to be selected against the runner up of the BIG or other SEC/BIg teams. So they probably can’t mail it in like that but the perverted incentive is definitely there.

I've been thinking this since the format was announced. Very arguable that the 5 seed is the best seed. The only considerations is injuries sustained in the 5 vs. 12 game.

Not having to go through an additional game that late in the season when you are already dealing with injuries/bumps and bruises I think is a pretty big deal.

It is the best seed, esp if you didn't have to play in a CCG. Being an 11-1 non-CCG participant from SEC or B1G is THE best position. Avoid a slugfest vs a top 4 opponent after the reg season is over, host the G5 participation trophy team 4 weeks later and even let you sit some banged up stars if needed, and coast into the QF CFP Bowls with that tuneup prepping you better than any bowl practice could...
