Auberge Amsterdam: the well-known fine-dining spot in De Pijp has reopened >> (2024)

One of Amsterdam’s finest new restaurants is Auberge, which isn’t entirely new. The acclaimed establishment in De Pijp is returning after being declared bankrupt last year. With some help from the owners of 212, De Juwelier, Bistro de la Mer, and De Mark, you can once again enjoy high-level dining at the renewed Auberge Amsterdam.

Why you want to visit the new Auberge Amsterdam

In the heart of De Pijp, an old familiar face is rising again. Meet the renewed Auberge Amsterdam, which has rebounded after a few months and is ready for a fresh start. Formerly known as Auberge Jean & Marie, the restaurant now operates under the name Auberge Cuisine Française (former owner Marije stepped away from it hence ‘Jean et Marie’ no longer feels right). The solid concept remains largely the same, featuring plenty of French classics with a modern interpretation. Never change a winning team, the new co-owners must have thought; after all, the restaurant has received several gastronomy awards, including Bib Gourmand and a mention in the Gault&Millau guide.

The restaurant’s previous lack of profitability was partly due to the pandemic and the accompanying lockdowns. When they were allowed to reopen, they couldn’t find good staff, so the owners themselves returned to the kitchen, occasionally aided by a friend in the service. It no longer met the quality and reputation they had worked hard to establish over seven years. Add to that the higher prices, and the owners couldn’t sustain it any longer – much to the dismay of the regular guests.

Menu Auberge

The menu at Auberge Amsterdam is classically French. Think leeks with buttermilk and lime vinaigrette as a starter, and for example, confit duck leg with white beans and jus with salted orange as a main course. And although French cuisine is very meat-oriented, vegetarians are also well-catered for here.

The regular guests are happy and grateful that Auberge’s hospitality adventure doesn’t end after their bankruptcy. While other establishments owned by the new co-owners often have a Michelin star, Auberge aims to remain accessible and of high qualitywithout too much fuss. The restaurant should be inviting, even a bit unpretentious within its genre. This means that you can go there for a good glass of wine with a plate of snails, but also for an extensive French dinner.
