A single acorn lay under our front doormat.I had noticed the bump at Thanksgiving but left it there. After all, such a brave, efficient squirrel should be rewarded. Two months later the acorn disappeared. Remembered and found. It might be the same with ideas. We make note of something in our phone, on a sticky note or envelope scrap. I do start new documents all the time with word bits. Months pass, and I return to the quote scrap to see if it was a true seed or a fancy.Sometimes we simply like an idea or grouping of words and note them to remember, much like the practice of commonplacing. Thomas Jefferson is often credited with the idea of a commonplace journal, making deliberate notes of things he wanted to remember like quotes, news, poetry, verses, et al. He kept two kinds: a legal one and a literary one. You can read Jefferson’s fine handwriting in those same journals at the United StatesLibrary of Congress website.Charlotte Mason narrows the idea of commonplacing, calling it the hunt for literary beauty. It’s more than liking. It’s noticing. It might even mingle with what L.M. Montgomery’s Emily calls “the flash”—"Tonight the dark boughs against that far-off sky had given it [the flash]. It had come with a high, wild note of wind in the night, with a shadow-wave over a ripe field, with a greybird lighting on her window-sill in a storm, with the singing of ‘Holy, holy, holy’ in church, with a glimpse of the kitchen fire when she had come home on a dark autumn night, with the spirit-like blue of ice palms on a twilit pane, with a felicitous new word . . . then Emily felt that life was a wonderful, mysterious thing of persistent beauty."—Emily of New MoonRead more at https://lnkd.in/gji*zm9gb#education #classicaleducation #teaching #teachinglife #writingcommunity #writing #journaling

I really enjoy reading great non-fiction books slowly, taking notes (not highlighting!) along the way. This enables me to engage deeply with the content, reflect, and capture what matters most to me, enriching my personal knowledge base with valuable insights and ideas

CHILDREN'S AUTHORS - ENSURING YOUR BOOK IS MARKETABLE💡You've had a fantastic idea.💡You've created your characters.💡You've plotted out your arc.So what's next...🔹️ How well do you know your genre and genre expectations?🔹️ Have you developed your characters?🔹️ Have you thought ahead to illustrations to help with the pacing and flow of your manuscript?🔹️ Are you aware of the vocabulary expectations for your genre?🔶️ Then there are the layout and publishing processes.WHY IT'S IMPORTANT THAT YOUR SELF-PUBLISHED BOOK LOOKS TRADITIONALLY PUBLISHED...🔷️ Whether or not you are hoping to publish traditionally, your book must meet the accepted and expected standards in children’s publishing to...🔹️ Stand a chance of sitting on the shelves of Waterstones, Barnes & Noble, and your lovely local independent book shops who are often short on space.🔹️ Stand you in good stead when a future agent or traditional publisher is taking into account your back library of titles. 🔹️ Increase your chances of school author visits.🔶️🔷️🔶️ Once published, authors must market their books... to do this, their books must be marketable!More information on my Mentoring Sessions can be found on my website, link below, or DM me here.https://lnkd.in/eq2T8-Te#childrensauthor #writingmentor #mentoringchildrensauthors #writingcommunity

Little website update for the new year! I added separate pages for fiction copy editing, nonfiction editorial services, and dissertation help; a gallery of cool books I've worked on; a few new client testimonials; and a link to my Reedsy page. As we move into the spring semester, I know there are folks out there who are overwhelmed thinking about finishing (or starting!) their thesis or dissertation. Whether it's helping organize your thoughts, editing for clarity and research consistency, fixing typos, or building a bibliography, I can take some of the stress out and help you meet university requirements! For those services (as well as transcriptions, indexing, and a host of other steps in the fiction and nonfiction publishing process), check out the website and hit me up!
