PAINTINGS DONATED FOR AUCTIONVariety is the word which best sums up the stories of the artists
who are contributing pictures to be sold at the auction being held by theSanibel-Captiva Art League on March 14 at 8:00 at Casa Ybel Auditor-ium. There is great variety in their styles of painting and also in theartists' education, art training, work and travel. A few of those who havedonated pictures at this time are:
Elizabeth N. deVicq, who winters on Captiva is a graduate of Mass-achusetts College of Art. She has two sons,Tech. Se rgean t JosephE. deVicq of the Air Force and Commander David C. deVicq, a civilengineer with the Navy. To quote Mrs. deVicq, "I'll bet I am the onlyartist in the auction with a Japanese daughter-in-law and two beautifulJapanese-American grandchildren." When at home at Gloucester, Mass.,she is active in several artists' associations. For the past few yearswhe has specialized in watercolor paintings of mushrooms. Her mostrecent one-man show was held this winter at Stuart, Florida.
Margaret L. Dugdale, who has spent winters on Captiva for 32 years, also finds inspiration for her watercolor work in the forms of nature. However, her specialties have been paintings of the life cycle of butter-flies native to Maryland (her home state) and Florida, sea life fromlive specimens, and a portfolio of the plant life of Captiva and Florida.Mrs. Dugdale was a friend and protege of "Ding" Darling for whom the

sanctuary is named.Mary Pevear, who has a home on Captiva near her sisters, Mrs.
Harold Bixby and Mrs. Audenreld Whittemore, makes a unique con-tribution to the auction. She studied over five years with internationallyknown decoupage artists Maybelle and Hiram Manning in Boston. Fromthe typical two dimensional decoupage requiring 25 to 30 time consum-ing coats of varnish, her work has evolved to a three-dimensional formfor which Mrs. Pevear often uses copies of the famous Currier and Ivesprints. It is one of these which she has donated. Mrs. Pevear Is alsounique among the artists In that she is the only one who has three great-grandchildren.
Born in Savannah, Georgia, and educated at Georgia Tech, Leon Levyfound his way to New York where he established his reputation as anarchitect. Best known of the buildings he designed and brought Into beingis the New York Coliseum. After retiring to Sanlbel, Mr. Levy turnedhis artistic talent to painting. He has experimented with many materialsand techniques with such success that he has won numerous prizes inarea juried shows and has sold paintings to many private collectors.Since retiring, he and Mrs. Levy have travelled in the United Statesand Europe.
Some of the world may have rubbed off on Oneita McCulloch as she{•swelled to many far places with her husband, Paul. The color andmood of her oil paintings have been affected more by remembered vig-nettes and vistas from Bali to Greenwich than by formal education andtraining. This responsiveness to the world around her is now evidencedin her hibiscus paintings, one of which will be in the auction.
Another world traveller is Wllb Snyder whose profession and mil-itary service have taken him to Europe, the Carribean, Africa, Aus-tralia, New Zealand, South America, to Greece for two years, to Indiafor 18 months, and to the Middle East. After graduating from the Uni-versity of Pennsylvania and taking his Masters and Ph. D. degrees at

Letter ToThe Editor
To The Islander:I would like to quote from a
letter received by the PlanningCommittee from the firm ofSasaki, Dawson, DeMay Associ-ates, Landscape Planners, oneof the finest and best known suchoutfits in the country. Mr. Rich-ard E. Galehouse, who signed theletter, is a frequent visitor here.
"Because the Islands are u-nique and physically fragile, theland use controls which guidetheir development must be care-fully designed and tailored to theIslands' special qualities. Lowrise, high quality development isconsistent with the unique quali-ties of the Islands. High rise, high density development is in-compatible and in all likelihoodwould destroy the very charact-eristics which make the islandsso attractive.'*
This firm planned the SeaPines Plantation development onHilton Head, S.C. Building heightsthere are limited to 35 ft. — nonerise over the tree tops. Withsuch an authoritative opinion,Adley Associates should certain-ly stop insisting that high risesare all right on Sanibel and Cap-tiva. Each one of the Commis-sioners received a copy of Mr.Galehouse's letter in the briefprepared by our attorneys.

To The Islander:I first came here five years
ago for two days of shelling withmy late husband. Two years agoI returned with my little girl andfound Sanibel pretty much thesame. It was then, on a longervisit, that I discovered the won-derful birds there.
Last year I noticed a muchgreater change and as a memberof the National Audubon SocietyI became alarmed and before Ileft joined the Sanibel-CaptivaConservation Association. I sub-scribe to the Islander too so thatI might keep posted on develop-ments here.
The big question this week isthe high-rise and how to keep itout. I'd say developers are Justas big a menace. At present atleast six are bulldozing treesand digging canals. How manynext year and how many In 1972.One developer's salesmen toldme when I inquired about a lotthat I wouldn't "be allowed" tobuild a wooden house in their de-velopment. Concrete block, stuc-coed homes may be O.K. In therest of Florida and I'm sure someprefer them to frame here be-cause of upkeep but one afteranother in the same area is hard-ly "Sanibel Island style.'*
Three years ago I left Chicagofor the south suburbs. As an ex-hibitor of show dogs and an ownerof two Spaniels I had to "shop"the best area with the most liberalattitude toward pets. All muni-cipalities have their own rulesand regulations about hundreds ofthings. Perhaps you could In-corporate into a town, village orcity and write your own ticket.Your county is being pushed bystrong and persistent people whohave the money to continue thebattle. Elect your conservation-ists to the legislative bodies andyou might be able to stop thisbefore it gets out of hand.
The Everglades has beenspared the ]et-port, save t h eislands from the developerswhose first business of the day ismoney and not nature.

To The Islander:The Sanibel-Captiva Planning
Committee wishes to expressappreciation to all Islanders andsupporters who were present atthe hearing Feb. 17. This mag-nificent show of strength, over300 people, made a very deepimpression on both the Commis-sioners and those who oppose us.We regret so many had to standbut your presence not only great-ly encouraged our speakers butalso indicated, beyond the shadowof a doubt, where we stand on thehigh rise controversy. Conse-quently, the Commissioners haveindicated, that if Sanibel and Cap-tiva can be designated as a specialarea, they probably will agree to a35 ft. height restriction for us.Our attorneys are p r e s e n t l yworking with the County Attorneyon such an ordinance. However, since we are not yet out of thewoods on this, and will not be un-til all the legal procedures havebeen completed, we ask your con-tinued help by sending In cards, writing the Commissioners, andmaking what contributions youcan to help defray our continuinglegal costs. Many thanks,

SANIBEL-CAPTIVASHELL CLUB
It was standing room only atthe Februa/y meeting of the San-bel-Captlva Shell Club whenRobert Lipe of the St. Peters-burg Shell Club took the audienceon a family camping trip whichstarted in one of the lovely in-land Florida State parks and thenwent to the Keys where they un-expectedly met up with a fieldtrip of the Broward County ShellClub with plenty of room to take
Bob along to the reef.Bob and 12 year old daughter
Alice snorkeled while the restof the family including a one yearold niece stayed ashore. Wenever did know where the reefwas but did get clues as to theother shelling places.
There were beautiful goldei.Marginellas with the gold, spottedas one specie fed on another butthere was plenty of activity tosatisfy all.
An added note was the pres-ence, in addition to the Lipes fromthe St. Petersburg Shell Club,of seven from the Chicago Club, two from the Boston Club, twofrom Rochester, N.Y. and two*from the Connecticut Valley Clubwhich headquarters in Spring-field, Mass.
Last year Mr. Lipe won theSmithsonian Award which is givenonly to the St. Petersburg ShellShow. He is entering in this year'sShell Fair.square mantle extended. In factthere were several species ofMarginella, all live and all withtheir mantles extended.
The most interesting p a r tcame when we saw the "finds"alive in the home aquarium. Nat-urally there were some fatalities
